2015-05-15 19:00:00 Ypres Salient - Historic Battlefield Visit
The Royal British Legion Paris is organising a visit to the principal sites of the Ypres Salient in Belgium on the week-end of Friday 15th - Sunday 17th May, as part of the 100th anniversary commemorations of the First World War.
The Ypres Salient is the site where some of the deadliest battles of the First World War were fought and re-fought over the same ground. It was originally formed by British, French, Belgian and Canadian troops to halt the German "Race to the Sea" in 1914. The 1st battles saved the area from occupation, but marked the beginning of trench warfare. The 2nd Battle of Ypres in 1915 saw the first use of gas and the near destruction of the town, to be followed by the 3rd Battle and Passchendaele. Having almost lost the salient, the Allies managed to reverse the tide in August 1918, in the 5th Battle of Ypres, part of the 100 Days Offensive, which finally ousted the Germans.
